Every year around this time I take a call from someone who sounds exactly the same. They’ve decided on UPPSC PCS, they’ve bought four books, they’ve joined three Telegram channels — and they still can’t tell me how many papers are in Mains or what the CSAT cutoff actually is. That’s not a knowledge problem. That’s a map problem. Nobody ever sat them down and showed them the whole exam at once.
So that’s what this is. The entire UPPSC PCS exam — eligibility, stages, pattern, posts, salary, the lot — laid out the way I’d explain it across a table. Every date and number here is checked against the Commission’s own documents, and I’ll tell you exactly where each one comes from, because this is a field where coaching websites copy each other’s outdated pages for years.
UPPSC PCS 2026 Exam Date and Notification: the dates that actually matter
Let’s start with the one thing everyone gets wrong because they read it on a results-aggregator site.
UPPSC PCS Prelims 2026 is on Sunday, 6 December 2026. This isn’t an “expected” date. It’s Entry 76 in the official UPPSC Exam Calendar 2026 — letter no. 2920/14/मिस/ई-1/2000-01 टी.सी., issued from Prayagraj on 30 January 2026 — where it’s listed as सम्मिलित राज्य / प्रवर अधीनस्थ सेवा (प्रारम्भिक) परीक्षा—2026. I pulled that PDF off the Commission’s site myself.
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Notification released (Advt. No. A-1/E-1/2026) | 25 June 2026 |
| Last date to apply & pay fee | 3 August 2026 |
| Application correction window closed | 10 August 2026 |
| Prelims exam | 6 December 2026 (Sunday) |
| Prelims admit card | Not yet released (as of 17 October 2026); to be issued on uppsc.up.nic.in before the exam. Latest update |
| Mains exam | To be announced in the 2027 exam calendar |
| Vacancies notified | Approximately 500 (Group A & Group B) |
As of 17 October 2026, Prelims is 50 days away. That single fact should shape how the remaining weeks are used: revision, full-length mocks and analysis, not new sources. A phase-wise plan for exactly this period is in How to Prepare for UPPSC PCS 2026: Last 50-Day Prelims Revision Plan. For the latest notices (admit card, PCS 2025 interviews), see the UPPSC PCS 2026 update.

The Commission’s own calendar, letter no. 2920/14/मिस/ई-1/2000-01 टी.सी. dated 30 January 2026 — Prelims 2026 appears at Entry 76. We host a copy here because UPPSC’s site blocks direct links and returns a “File Not Found” page.

UPPSC PCS Official Notification 2026 PDF: how to actually find it
Worth knowing before you go hunting: uppsc.up.nic.in blocks direct links. If you click a PDF link someone shared on WhatsApp, you’ll usually land on a “File Not Found — Sorry for inconvenience” page, because the site rejects requests that arrive from a third-party link. That trips up a lot of aspirants who then assume the notification has been withdrawn. It hasn’t.
The reliable route is always: open uppsc.up.nic.in fresh in your browser, then navigate from the homepage — “All Notifications/Advertisements” for live adverts, or the “What’s New” panel for calendars and notices. Never bookmark the PDF link itself; bookmark the homepage.
One more habit worth building: treat the notification PDF as the final authority, including over this page. Every post-specific qualification, physical standard, reservation rule and fee detail lives in that advertisement. If anything here ever conflicts with it, the Commission wins.
What is UPPSC PCS? The posts, services and what the job really is
The formal name is the Combined State / Upper Subordinate Services Examination — सम्मिलित राज्य / प्रवर अधीनस्थ सेवा परीक्षा. Everyone calls it PCS or UPPCS. It’s conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission in Prayagraj, and it’s the single gateway to the bulk of gazetted Group A and Group B administrative posts in the state. (For how the Commission itself works — its history since 1937, its constitutional basis and who sits on it — see About UPPSC PCS.)
What throws newcomers is that one exam fills dozens of very different roles. You submit one form, sit one Prelims, and depending on your final rank and stated preferences you could end up as a Deputy Collector, a Deputy SP, a Block Development Officer or a District Audit Officer. The posts that draw the most attention:
- Deputy Collector (SDM) — the most sought-after post, and the one almost every top ranker lists first
- Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) — the police-service equivalent, with physical standards you must check in the advertisement
- Block Development Officer (BDO) — rural development administration at the block level
- Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) and Treasury Officer / Accounts Officer
- District Commandant Homeguards, District Audit Officer, Assistant Labour Commissioner and a long tail of specialised posts
Read the post list in the advertisement properly rather than skimming it. I’ve watched students fill preferences carelessly in the final week and land somewhere they never wanted, with no route back.
UPPSC PCS Eligibility Criteria 2026: can you actually sit this exam?
Nationality requirements
Indian citizen. Certain posts — the police and a few others — are restricted to Indian citizens only, while some open slightly wider. The advertisement spells this out post by post.
Educational qualification for UPPSC PCS
A Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university. Any stream — your subject does not matter, and it has no bearing on which post you can get. Final-year students can generally apply, but you must hold the degree by the date the advertisement specifies.
Some specialised posts carry extra requirements on top of the degree. If you’re targeting one of those, read its row in the advertisement carefully.
UPPSC PCS age limit 2026 — 21 to 40 years
21 to 40 years as on 1 July 2026 for the 2026 cycle. Note that upper limit — 40 — because it’s considerably more generous than UPSC CSE’s 32 for the general category. Relaxations apply for SC/ST, OBC, PwD and other categories as laid down in UP government rules, and the exact years are listed in the advertisement.
That higher ceiling is a genuinely underrated feature of this exam. I mentor working professionals in their thirties who’d written off the civil services entirely because they were measuring themselves against the UPSC age bar. For PCS, they often have several attempts left.
UP domicile for UPPSC PCS — the question I’m asked most
You do not need UP domicile to appear. Candidates from any state can apply and compete. What domicile changes is your access to reservation and age relaxation — those benefits are for UP-domiciled candidates in the relevant categories. If you’re from outside UP, you’re treated as general/unreserved for those purposes regardless of your home-state category status. This catches people out every single year.
One-Time Registration (OTR)
UPPSC now runs everything through OTR. Your OTR number is your permanent identity with the Commission across every post it advertises. Get it done well before any deadline — not on the last evening, when the servers are groaning and half of UP is trying to log in at once.
UPPSC PCS Exam Pattern 2026: the three stages and how they fit together
Prelims, Mains, Interview. Simple to say, routinely misunderstood in one specific way that costs people marks. Here’s the structure, and I’ve written a fuller breakdown of the UPPCS exam pattern separately.
UPPSC PCS Prelims exam pattern — screening only
| Paper | Questions | Marks | Duration | Nature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General Studies Paper I | 150 | 200 | 2 hours | Merit-deciding |
| General Studies Paper II (CSAT) | 100 | 200 | 2 hours | Qualifying — 33% needed |
Both papers are objective, and both carry 1/3rd negative marking. Because GS-I carries roughly 1.33 marks per question, a wrong answer there costs you about 0.44. CSAT questions are worth 2 marks each, so a wrong answer costs 0.66.
Now the part people get wrong. Only GS Paper I decides whether you clear Prelims. CSAT is purely qualifying — you need 33% (that’s 66 out of 200) and not one mark more matters. And your Prelims score does not carry into the final merit list at all. It is a gate, not a scoreboard.
Two opposite mistakes follow from misunderstanding that. Some aspirants pour weeks into CSAT chasing a high score that earns them nothing. Others ignore CSAT completely, walk in cold, and get knocked out by a comprehension-heavy paper despite a strong GS score. Both are avoidable. Give CSAT enough respect to clear 33% comfortably, then spend every remaining hour on GS-I.
UPPSC PCS Mains exam pattern — 1,500 marks, where the real fight is
This is where UPPSC has changed most, and where a lot of online material is still badly out of date.
The optional subject is gone. UPPSC scrapped optional papers and replaced them with two additional General Studies papers — GS-V and GS-VI, both dedicated to Uttar Pradesh. You’ll still find blogs listing “UPPCS optional subject list 2026” with thirty subjects to choose from. Ignore them. There is no optional paper to choose.
| Paper | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| General Hindi | 150 | 3 hours |
| Essay | 150 | 3 hours |
| General Studies I | 200 | 3 hours |
| General Studies II | 200 | 3 hours |
| General Studies III | 200 | 3 hours |
| General Studies IV | 200 | 3 hours |
| General Studies V (UP-focused) | 200 | 3 hours |
| General Studies VI (UP-focused) | 200 | 3 hours |
| Total | 1,500 | — |
Two things deserve your attention here. First, General Hindi is a full 150-mark paper, not a token language test — and for English-medium students from outside UP it’s frequently the difference between selection and a near miss. Second, GS-V and GS-VI together are 400 marks of pure Uttar Pradesh: its history, culture, governance, economy, agriculture, industry and environment. That’s more than a quarter of the Mains total riding on state-specific material that no UPSC book will teach you.
Siddharth Gupta, who topped UPPCS 2023 with Rank 1 and is now a Deputy Collector, has publicly advised aspirants to deliberately prioritise the Mains-exclusive territory — GS-IV, GS-V and GS-VI, along with governance, disaster management and social justice — rather than assuming general preparation will cover it. That advice tracks exactly with what I see in evaluated copies: the UP papers are where prepared candidates quietly pull ahead.
The full topic-by-topic breakdown, including what’s actually inside GS-V and GS-VI, is in the detailed UPPSC PCS syllabus guide.
UPPSC PCS Interview and Personality Test — 100 marks
A board conversation assessing personality, clarity, awareness and judgement. You may take it in Hindi or English. It’s worth 100 marks against Mains’ 1,500 — so roughly 6% of the final total.
Don’t let that percentage fool you into thinking it’s decorative. At the top of the list, candidates are separated by a handful of marks, and an interview swing of fifteen or twenty reshuffles ranks meaningfully. Expect heavy questioning on your home district, your graduation subject, and current affairs in Uttar Pradesh.
How the final UPPSC PCS merit list is calculated
Mains (1,500) + Interview (100) = 1,600 marks. Prelims contributes nothing. Internalise this early, because it changes how you should feel about a mediocre Prelims score — once you’re through, it’s genuinely erased.
UPPSC PCS Cut Off: what score actually clears Prelims?
The honest answer is that it moves every year with paper difficulty and vacancy count. But the general-category GS Paper I cutoff has historically sat in this band:
| Year | General category cutoff (out of 200) |
|---|---|
| 2018 | 126 |
| 2019 | 117 |
| 2020 | 110 |
| 2021 | 115 |
| 2022 | 111 |
| 2023 | 125 |
| 2024 | 101 |
Between 101 (2024) and 126 (2018) out of 200 — call it a working target of 125+ to be safe. The full category-wise and post-wise figures are in the UPPSC PCS cut-off (2018–2024). Always cross-check the official cutoff PDF on the Commission’s site rather than trusting a coaching page, and treat any “expected cutoff” published before the exam as guesswork.
What that number means in practice: with 1/3rd negative marking, blind guessing actively works against you. Accuracy beats volume. I’d rather a student attempt 105 questions with real confidence than 135 with a third of them as hopeful stabs.
UPPSC PCS Salary 2026 and what the job actually looks like
Group A posts such as SDM and DSP sit in Pay Level 10 of the 7th Pay Commission matrix, starting around ₹56,100 basic, with DA, HRA and other allowances on top. Group B posts start lower. Government accommodation, official transport for field posts, and the standard pension and medical benefits apply — and the advertisement carries the exact pay scale for each post.
The money is not the point, though, and if it is, you’ll struggle through the preparation. An SDM in a UP tehsil handles revenue matters, magisterial duties, elections, land disputes and disaster response — often for a population larger than some European countries. It is genuinely demanding work with real authority attached to it. Go in wanting that.
UPPSC PCS or UPSC CSE — which should you aim at?
Around 70–80% of the core syllabus overlaps, so this is less of a fork than it feels. The practical differences: PCS gives you an age ceiling of 40 against UPSC’s 32, a shorter cycle, roughly 500 posts concentrated in one state, and a mandatory Hindi paper plus 400 marks of UP-specific content. UPSC gives you a national cadre and far broader competition.
The mistake isn’t choosing wrong — it’s refusing to choose and running both preparations in parallel until neither is solid. We’ve written about how to decide between UPSC and State PCS in more depth.
Why most UPPSC PCS aspirants fail — and where they actually lose
After years of mentoring, I can tell you it’s almost never a lack of material. Everyone has the PDFs. The three things that sink attempts are: no revision discipline (reading eleven subjects once instead of six subjects four times), no honest feedback loop (nobody ever tells you your GS-V answers are description where they need analysis), and the silent drift — the fortnight that vanishes in October and nobody notices because nobody is tracking.
That last one is the quiet killer. Motivation is not a character trait; it’s a system. When someone checks in on you daily, a bad day stays a bad day instead of becoming a lost month.
UPPSC PCS mentorship: how GSMitra’s 1:1 guidance fits in
GSMitra isn’t a coaching class and we don’t pretend to be. What we run is one mentor, one student, with daily contact — a mentor who has personally sat these papers, builds your plan around your actual life, and then holds you to it.
- A plan built for your situation — a working professional with two hours on weeknights needs a fundamentally different schedule from a full-time aspirant in Prayagraj, and generic timetables serve neither.
- Daily accountability — you report what you covered, every day. Not to be policed, but because a plan nobody checks is just a wish. This is the single change that most reliably alters outcomes.
- Progress tracking that’s honest — mock scores, subject-wise accuracy and revision cycles tracked over weeks, so weak areas surface in October rather than on 6 December.
- Answer evaluation — real feedback on Mains answers, especially the UP-specific GS-V and GS-VI papers where most aspirants have nobody qualified to review their work.
- Targeted practice — our MCQ test builder lets you generate tests by book, topic or chapter from a bank of over 21,000 questions, so revision is active rather than re-reading.
We’ve mentored 500+ aspirants and hold a 4.8/5 average mentor rating. If you want to see whether it fits how you work, book a free consultation on WhatsApp — that first call is a genuine conversation about where you actually stand, not a sales pitch.
