UPSC Prelims Current Affairs: August 16, 2026

Independence Day week always dumps a pile of announcements on us at once — the trick isn’t reading all of it, it’s spotting which pieces actually have a static-syllabus hook. Here’s today’s shortlist, decoded for Prelims.

1

100 GW Nuclear Power Target by 2047

In his 80th Independence Day address from the Red Fort, PM Modi set a target of 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, alongside plans to commission five new reactors within six to seven years. The announcement follows India achieving criticality at the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, this year — a milestone in the second stage of India’s three-stage nuclear power programme.

Prelims angle: Revise Homi Bhabha’s three-stage nuclear programme (natural uranium reactors → fast breeder reactors using plutonium → thorium-based reactors, exploiting India’s large thorium reserves in Kerala’s monazite sands). Know that PFBR uses a mixed uranium-plutonium oxide fuel and is a Stage-2 facility. Also link this to the SHANTI Act (in force since December 2025), which repealed the Atomic Energy Act 1962 and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act 2010, and opened the sector to private-sector participation for the first time.

2

Mineral Exchange Rules, 2026

Parliament passed the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 on 13 August, paving the way for India’s first regulated electronic exchange for trading major minerals from the next financial year. The first phase will cover iron ore, bauxite, chromite, manganese, and limestone, with the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) supervising platform registration.

Prelims angle: Remember the Indian Bureau of Mines functions under the Ministry of Mines and is headquartered in Nagpur. This sits alongside the MMDR Act, 1957 (the parent legislation being amended) — a recurring Prelims favourite. Distinguish “major minerals” (regulated by the Centre under MMDR Act) from “minor minerals” (regulated by states) — a classic UPSC distinction.

3

Reliance–Rolls-Royce Combat Engine Partnership

Reliance Industries and Rolls-Royce announced a strategic partnership on 14 August to design, develop, and manufacture an indigenous combat aircraft engine in India, targeting a long-standing gap in India’s defence-industrial base.

Prelims angle: Note this under indigenous defence production and Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing. Fighter-jet engine technology has historically been one of the hardest capabilities for India to indigenise (recall the Kaveri engine programme by GTRE/DRDO) — keep this partnership in mind as a current example examiners like to pair with older static facts on India’s defence R&D bodies (DRDO, HAL).

4

Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s Punya Tithi

President Droupadi Murmu, PM Modi, and other leaders paid tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at his memorial “Sadaiv Atal” in New Delhi on his death anniversary, observed every year on 16 August since his passing in 2018.

Source: PIB

Prelims angle: A recurring static-history fact — Vajpayee was independent India’s first non-Congress PM to complete a full term, led the NDA coalition, and his government conducted the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998. Memorial names (Sadaiv Atal, Sadbhavana for Vajpayee) are the kind of low-hanging factual detail that shows up in “match the memorial to the leader” questions.

5

BRICS Environment Working Group Meetings

PIB announced that India will host the BRICS Environment Working Group Meetings at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, on 17-18 August, ahead of India’s broader engagements within the grouping this year.

Source: PIB

Prelims angle: Revise BRICS basics — original members (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) and the expanded membership since 2024 (Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia’s status pending). Bharat Mandapam, at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, is increasingly the venue of choice for India’s high-profile multilateral hosting — worth remembering alongside the G20 Summit 2023 connection.
