Five items from today worth locking into your revision notes — two carry real static-syllabus weight, so don’t just skim past the numbers.
12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting
India hosted the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi today, under its 2026 BRICS Chairship, with the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” Union Minister Bhupender Yadav chaired the meeting, which ended in the consensual adoption of a Joint Ministerial Statement (the New Delhi Statement on Environment) and the launch of four knowledge compendiums on shared environmental priorities.

Prelims angle: BRICS is a frequent source of “which grouping/summit” questions. Remember: India holds the BRICS Chairship in 2026; this was the 12th edition of the Environment Ministers’ track specifically; and note the venue (Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi) alongside the outcome document’s name.
DRI Busts ₹2,500 Crore SAFTA Fraud in Areca Nut Imports
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has dismantled a network that imported areca nuts from Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia while falsely declaring them as Bangladeshi in origin, to fraudulently claim duty exemptions under the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) agreement. The estimated revenue loss exceeds ₹2,500 crore; nine people have been arrested, with roughly ₹75 lakh in cash and 160 tonnes of areca nuts seized in related raids.

Prelims angle: Static-syllabus gold — SAFTA (South Asian Free Trade Area), Rules of Origin, and the role of DRI under the Ministry of Finance/CBIC are all testable. Note that areca nut normally attracts 100% Basic Customs Duty, which is precisely why misdeclaring origin under a preferential trade agreement is lucrative for fraudsters.
Exercise MAITREE-XV Begins in Thailand
The 15th edition of the India-Thailand joint military exercise, MAITREE-XV, began today at Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp, Surat Thani, Thailand, and runs till August 31. Roughly 85 personnel each from the Indian Army (led by troops of 9 Gorkha Rifles) and the Royal Thai Army are training together on jungle and semi-urban counter-terror operations. The exercise series was instituted in 2006.

Prelims angle: India runs a long list of bilateral defence exercises — examiners love mixing up the partner country. Tag this one firmly: MAITREE = India-Thailand (est. 2006). Don’t confuse it with Indra (Russia), Garuda Shakti (Indonesia), or Mitra Shakti (Sri Lanka).
President Approves 78 Gallantry Awards for 80th Independence Day
President Droupadi Murmu has approved 78 gallantry awards, including 13 posthumous, for Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces personnel on the occasion of the 80th Independence Day. The list includes 9 Kirti Chakras, 1 Bar to Shaurya Chakra, 19 Shaurya Chakras, 5 Bars to Sena Medal (Gallantry), 36 Sena Medals (Gallantry), 3 Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry) and 5 Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry), alongside 89 Mentions-in-Despatches.

Prelims angle: Know the peacetime gallantry award hierarchy: Ashok Chakra > Kirti Chakra > Shaurya Chakra, each with a service-specific “medal” equivalent (Sena/Nao Sena/Vayu Sena Medal for Gallantry) at the next tier down. This is distinct from wartime awards (Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra) — a classic prelims trap.
Bharat Taxi Crosses 8 Lakh Drivers, 41 Lakh Customers
Bharat Taxi, India’s first cooperative-sector ride-hailing platform, has registered around 8.27 lakh driver-members (called “Sarathis”) and about 41 lakh customers as of late July 2026. Set up under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002 by institutions including NABARD, IFFCO, Amul, NAFED and NCDC, it runs a zero-commission model and is currently live in Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Mumbai, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kanpur and Pune, with plans for nationwide expansion by 2029.

Prelims angle: Connects to the cooperative-sector cluster of questions — the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, the 97th Constitutional Amendment Act (right to form cooperative societies), and the newer Ministry of Cooperation (created 2021). Remember Bharat Taxi as a concrete example when a question asks you to identify a “cooperative-model” initiative.
