Six items today, and honestly a denser Prelims day than most — a defence test, a quantum computing first, a conservation milestone, and a governance reform all landed on the same day. Here’s what’s worth remembering and why.
DRDO Flight-Tests Long-Range Hypersonic Missile
The Defence Research and Development Organisation successfully flight-tested an indigenously developed long-range hypersonic missile from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast. Developed by the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex, Hyderabad, along with other DRDO laboratories and industry partners, the missile is designed to carry different payloads over ranges greater than 1,500 km for the armed forces.

Prelims angle: Hypersonic weapons travel above Mach 5 and can manoeuvre mid-flight, unlike fixed-trajectory ballistic missiles — know this distinction, and remember Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island (formerly Wheeler Island), Odisha, as DRDO’s principal missile test range.
India Demonstrates First Free-Space Quantum Key Distribution Link
QNu Labs, along with BISAG-N and IIT Gandhinagar, demonstrated India’s first free-space Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) link, spanning 5.56 km between BISAG-N and IIT Gandhinagar. The trial paired QNu Labs’ hardware-based QKD device with BISAG-N’s “Vedic Kavach” post-quantum cryptography and quantum random number generation system, achieving a stable Quantum Bit Error Rate below 5% and secure key generation at 230–260 bits per second.

Prelims angle: QKD uses the laws of quantum mechanics, not mathematical complexity, to detect eavesdropping — any interception disturbs the quantum state and reveals itself. Distinguish free-space QKD (through open air/line of sight) from fibre-based QKD, and note BISAG-N is headquartered in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
Captive-Bred Great Indian Bustards Released Into the Wild
In a decade-long conservation effort’s culmination, captive-bred Great Indian Bustards were released into the wild at Desert National Park, Jaisalmer, on October 3 and 4 — the first time captive-bred birds of this species have been set free in India. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and the Rajasthan Chief Minister initiated the release, supervised by scientists from the Wildlife Institute of India. The breeding programme currently holds 97 birds across its Sam and Ramdevra centres.

Prelims angle: The Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps) is Rajasthan’s state bird, IUCN Critically Endangered, and the species at the centre of the Supreme Court’s orders on undergrounding power lines in its habitat to prevent collision deaths. Remember Desert National Park, Jaisalmer, as its core habitat.
New Rules Notified for Tribunal Appointments Under the NTC
The Union Law Ministry notified the National Tribunals Commission and Qualification, Selection and Conditions of Service of Chairperson and Members of Tribunals Rules, 2026, standardising recruitment, eligibility, remuneration and a formal misconduct-inquiry mechanism for heads and members across 16 tribunals and appellate bodies. The Commission itself will be headed by a sitting or former Supreme Court judge or High Court Chief Justice, with two judicial members and two technical members with over 25 years of domain experience.

Prelims angle: This operationalises the Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026’s National Tribunals Commission (NTC), which shifts tribunal appointments from executive control toward a judiciary-led body. Link this to the Tribunals Reforms Act, 2021 and judicial pronouncements like Rojer Mathew v. South Indian Bank on tribunal independence.
World Space Week 2026 Begins Under “Rocket Revolution” Theme
World Space Week 2026 began on October 4 and runs through October 10, under the UN-endorsed theme “Rocket Revolution.” The week marks the anniversary of Sputnik 1’s launch (October 4, 1957) and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty (October 10, 1967), and India is marking it with student rocketry and space-education events nationwide.

Prelims angle: We’d covered India’s growing commercial launch and satellite ecosystem earlier in our piece on India’s Space Economy. For Prelims, remember the Outer Space Treaty, 1967, as the foundational instrument of international space law, administered by UNOOSA.
“Jal Arpan” Handover of Water Schemes Under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0
As part of a Special Gram Sabha around Gandhi Jayanti, “Jal Arpan” — the formal handover of completed rural water supply schemes to Gram Panchayats and Village Water and Sanitation Committees for operation and maintenance — was observed in over 1,850 Gram Panchayats on October 3 to strengthen local ownership under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0. Over 15.96 crore rural households, more than 82% of the target, now have tap water connections under the mission.

Prelims angle: Jal Jeevan Mission (launched 2019) aims for “Har Ghar Jal” — a functional tap connection in every rural household. JJM 2.0 focuses on sustaining that infrastructure through local-body ownership (Gram Panchayats, VWSCs) — a recurring scheme-based static-plus-current question.
