SSA 5000 is the Standard on Sustainability Assurance issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in September 2026 to verify companies’ sustainability disclosures and curb greenwashing. It is aligned with the IAASB’s global ISSA 5000, with Indian carve-outs on joint audits and forward-looking statements, and applies to financial years beginning on or after 1 April 2027. It replaces the existing SSAE 3000 and SAE 3410.

Context
On 20 September 2026, ICAI issued “SSA 5000 – General Requirements and Framework for Sustainability Assurance Engagements”. It covers assurance on disclosures such as greenhouse gas emissions, energy, water, waste, biodiversity, employee practices, diversity and governance. As investors, regulators and consumers rely more on ESG data, independent assurance has become essential.

What Is Greenwashing?
Greenwashing is making environmental or sustainability claims that are exaggerated, misleading, selective or not backed by evidence, for example calling a product “carbon neutral” without credible offsets, or highlighting one green project while hiding polluting operations. India’s Central Consumer Protection Authority notified Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Greenwashing and Misleading Environmental Claims in 2024 for advertising. SSA 5000 tackles the problem in corporate reporting.
Link with SEBI’s BRSR Framework
- SEBI’s Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) is mandatory for the top 1,000 listed companies by market capitalisation (from FY 2022–23).
- BRSR Core is a set of key, verifiable indicators on which the largest listed companies must obtain assurance or assessment on a glide path.
- SSA 5000 gives assurance providers a common, globally aligned methodology, so the quality of assurance is consistent across companies.
Significance
- Investor confidence: Reliable ESG data lowers the cost of capital and attracts global sustainable finance.
- Global market access: Supply-chain disclosure demands such as the EU’s CSRD and CBAM need verified emissions data from Indian exporters.
- Climate goals: Credible corporate data supports India’s net-zero 2070 pledge and the Indian Carbon Market.
- Level playing field: One standard applies whether the assurance provider is an accountant or another professional.
- Green finance integrity: Supports green and blue bond markets, where use-of-proceeds claims must be verified.
Challenges
- Capacity: Assurance needs technical knowledge of emissions, water and biodiversity, beyond financial audit skills.
- Data systems: Many companies, especially mid-sized ones and their MSME suppliers, lack robust ESG data controls.
- Cost: Reasonable assurance is expensive, and costs fall heavily on smaller listed firms.
- Scope 3 emissions: Value-chain data is estimated and hard to verify.
- Multiple regulators: SEBI, MCA, CCPA and RBI each touch ESG, so coordination is required.
Way Forward
- Phase in reasonable assurance, starting with core indicators and the largest companies.
- Train professionals through joint ICAI programmes with environmental scientists and engineers.
- Build digital ESG data infrastructure and templates for MSME suppliers.
- Adopt a consistent national sustainability reporting standard aligned with ISSB.
- Penalise false claims under the SEBI, CCPA and Companies Act frameworks.
Conclusion
Sustainability reports are only useful if the numbers in them can be trusted. SSA 5000 puts India’s sustainability assurance on a par with global practice. Its real test from 2027 will be whether assurance is done rigorously enough to make greenwashing costly.

Mains Practice Question
Q. Greenwashing undermines both environmental goals and investor trust. Discuss how independent sustainability assurance, such as the new SSA 5000, can address this, and the challenges in implementing it in India. (10 marks, 150 words)
Approach: Define greenwashing with examples. Explain SSA 5000 and its link to BRSR. Cover significance (investors, EU CSRD/CBAM, net zero). Give challenges (capacity, data, cost, Scope 3). Conclude with phasing and enforcement.
